I was recently given this unusual book, with the tag line “The Outing Cookbook” by Elizabeth Case and Martha Wyman, published in 1937.

It seems to be basically camp cooking for rich people. Recall that this was published during the Great Depression, a period of massive unemployment and poverty. And then consider the dishes, many of which include luxury ingredients. (We had to look up what “Bar-le-Duc” was. It’s currently running $46 USD for a small jar (85 g). One dessert recipe in this book requires 2 full jars of the stuff. To serve 6 people).
Picnics are “al fresco” meals with some pretty fancy sounding components. And the suggestions for minimum liquor cabinet contents are quite extensive.
